Kiwi life

if you don't like a quiet outdoorsy family oriented life, NZ is not for you. At the very edge of the world, far removed from everything, not much happens here

You

Your kids

Your dog(s), cat(s), and various farm animals

Your spouse

Your family-sized pick-up truck. Your town car. Your hand-me-down shit car from 2001 that you let your teenagers drive. Your trailers - one for the bikes, another for the boat, and one for general stuff.

Your DIY shed - so well equipped it could rival with home depot.

Your mountain bikes, tramping boots (multiple pairs), snowboards and skis in the secondary garage - the main one is for the cars. No, space is no issue here.

Your big house, and its big garden, adjacent to a big empty land. No neighbours around, low density population area - space is no issue here.

Your camping gear, the full monty - Your 8-person dome tent with 4 rooms and 2 living spaces, your folding chairs, gazebo and inflatable beds. Your foldable table, camping stove and outdoor kitchen set, complete with pans that have foldable handles, unbreakable plates and cups.

Your climbing group, running club, cycling crew, tramping mana. Many of which overlap with family, in-laws, colleagues and friends (those also intersect quite a lot).

Your camping weekends with the kids, tramping days out, your beach breaks surfing, your skiing tours, your boating trips on the lakes or on the pacific coast - when you have time off, which is often.

Your cushy job, with its very reasonable working hours, all well guarded by strong employment laws and decent pay. If you get one, NZ is a small economy, there isn't plenty to go around. Luckily, NZ is a low population density zone throughout, there aren't a lot of people to compete with. There aren't a lot of people full stop.

Your childcare duties, your household work.

Your DIY - you have time for ambitious projects and space for all the materials needed, and your friends love it too, you bond over this.

Your beers, and local wines.

Your food, English, meaty and greasy.

Your early starts, early nights in, with the occasional boozing - but usually that's in the day time, everyone's in bed by 11pm latest.

Your community, almost entirely made of locals who've never left - except maybe once or twice to Australia. The place others regard as the land down-under is the big place to you, the big land where big things happen.

Your simple life
